This smelter still stands today! A silver boomtown in 1866, the mansions owner initially came to Silver Mountain City to develop silver mines and eventually acquired the Exchequer mine (and others) located near the property, where he eventually built his home. It became known as the Chalmers Mansion. With a then a population of 3000 people, Silver Mountain City was the county seat of Alpine County from 1864-1875.
